| SMTP (Simple Mail Transport Protocol) settings: If you are using the server to fetch email, here is what you need in your email program - be sure to replace "yourdomain.com" with your hosted domain. (See also info on setting up to receive email here.) mailserver: mail.yourdomain.com Use port 25 first; if this doesn't not work, then you can try port 26. If that won't do it, you can also try port 587. Some internet service providers block some of these ports, so we have a few different alternatives available for getting your mail. (Some ISPs require you use their mail server for outbound email: More info here.) Our email is currently NOT using SSL connections. In Outlook, this is what your email settings look like. While different email programs will look different, they should all have the same basic options to set up. Your email may be set up either as a POP or IMAP account.
Selecting the "More Settings" button will give you further options. For General Options: You can put whatever you like in the "Mail Account" area - it's just to help you identify which email account you're referencing. The "Organization" and "Reply-Email" fields will show up when you send email to someone, and direct what email address a "reply" command will go to. If you mistype the reply-to email address, folks will have trouble answering your email and it sometimes takes a while to realize it.
Outgoing Server Options: You can specifiy the information again for your outbound email (either the same as your inbound email, or, if required by your Internet provider, their email settings), if you're using your domain to send outbound email, you can simply check the "use the same settings" option. Your outbound server DOES require authentication, but does NOT use Secure Password Authenication (SPA) protocol.
You should not need to adjust the Connection tab. On the Advanced tab: Use the ports mentioned above (25, 26, or 587). For a POP email accont, the incoming server port will be different than an IMAP email account, so don't let this image confuse you. But for both, the SMTP/outbound email settings are the same. The defaults you see when you get to this screen will usually be right.
That's it! Make sure you send a few test messages to see everything is working properly. If you have trouble setting up your outbound email or it's not working properly, don't hesitate to ask for help! Happy emailing. |
